Once when I was about eight, I asked my mother whether she'd ever cheated on my father."... My mother was taken aback by my question.

"Ben, do you know what cheating means?" she asked.

"Cheating means looking at your classmate's paper during an exam," I replied.

"I have never cheated on your father," my mum said.

My mother's choice of words didn't exclude the possibility that the thought had crossed her mind, and unspoken in her reply was everything around the complexity and difficulty of sustaining a marriage decades. But maybe I was reading too much into what she did or didn't say.
